The Filipino Bar Association of Northern California (FBANC) Women's Committee and the FBANC Foundation will be awarding a scholarship to send a law student, recent grad, or new attorneys practicing for no more than 2 years to Hawai'i! This scholarship will provide registration for Friday and Saturday of Pinay Powerhouse 3 as well as flight and accommodation up to $1,000.

OFALA held its annual meeting on January 28, 2019. After statements from outgoing President Julia Markley, Honorable Judge Janelle Factora Wipper spoke for the first time as the official president of OFALA. Thank you to each of these Washington Minority Bar Associations (MBAs) that issued a joint statement in support of several Oregon specialty bar associations' - one of which is OFALA - statement disavowing white supremacy. Today, the Supreme Court heard arguments over the Muslim Ban. The Oregon Filipino American Lawyers Association and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association stand opposed to this discriminatory and unlawful order. Asian Pacific American lawyers around the country are united saying “No Muslim Ban Ever.”

Today, it was announced that Governor Kate Brown appointed Steven R. Powers to the Oregon Court of Appeals. Steve will be the first Filipino American appellate judge in Oregon.

On July 11, 2017, Governor Kate Brown announced eight appointments to fill judicial vacancies on Oregon’s courts. These appointments will be effective July 17, 2017.

Among the appointments to the Oregon Court of Appeals, the Honorable Steven R. Powers comes highly regarded. He will also be the first Filipino American appellate judge in Oregon.

On February 28 a robust group of about 60 Filipino attorneys, judges, and other  community members community gathered to celebrate Oregon’s newest bar association, the Oregon Filipino American Lawyers Association (OFALA).

In 2015 the association started out with just an email; it then grew into social gatherings of Filipino lawyers and law students. Then, in a small conference room in September 2016, a mission was realized and bylaws were formed, and ultimately OFALA was founded.
